The broadcasts have been added!

Broadcasts
This weeks update includes the addition of the broadcasts section to the site along with a ton of bug fixes. With the addition of this section came a lot of hurdles to get over to make sure the broadcasts display properly across the entire site. Rather than going through the trouble of inserting your own thumbnail image for each video, functions have been put in place to automatically generate the YouTube thumbnail from the video link, and convert the regular YouTube URL into a embed-able URL in accordance to YouTube’s iframe standards. There are still some strange issues with this new feature, but they will be remedied as the updates come along.

To post a video to the Broadcasts section go to the new post page (like you would for any article) and change the type from “News” to “Broadcasts.” Once this option is changed, the category input and image gallery button disappear. Since there are no categories in place for the broadcasts right now, the broadcasts all fall under the “broadcasts” category. In other words, links for the broadcasts pages look like “canaryjones.com/broadcasts/broadcasts/name-of-the-video.” In the near future, a feature to add, change, and remove categories will be added to the admin dashboard to fix this. When adding the video to the article, copy and paste the YouTube video URL into the form. Once the article is submitted, the link is validated to check if it is the right format and if it is a YouTube link.

When viewing a Broadcasts article, the video is placed where the main article image would typically be. In any scenario in which a broadcast article is being viewed in a list, the video URL is converted to a YouTube API image URL, so the video thumbnail shows as the article image. With the addition of this section, the broadcasts feed have been added to the search page, home page, and the related articles feed.

Other Small Changes

Filler posts have been added to more accurately depict the sites layout. These will be deleted before this site is ready for the public.

Looped Slideshow
The slideshow now loops changes to the next slide every 4 seconds. This function did not work last week because a new slideshow was put in place.

Title Text on Hover
Now, when you hover over a link the title text shows after a few seconds. This did not work previously because HTML5 changed this function to only work with title attributes rather than alt attributes.

Filtered Featured Posts
The home page was showing featured posts in the recent posts section, thus showing the post two times on the home page. Now, the recent posts feed does not show posts that are featured at the top.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed the register account page. It was not validating email addresses properly and prevented users from signing up.
  • Removed the Add Image button from the Gallery when there is no input to add an image URL, thus preventing the gallery from closing when that button was pressed.
