This week’s update put the new framework to the test, and it is safe to say that the time and effort put into creating this new framework paid off! Not only are page elements and functions happening at the right time, the framework is continuing to take control of it’s own processing allowing for proper error handling and element placement across the entire site.

Image Captions
The author name space has been replaced with a space to enter an image caption for the main article image. This caption will appear right under the main image and in the alt text of the image every time it is displayed on the page. This “alt text” allows for an image description when the user hovers their mouse over the image. These captions can act as a sub headline or description of the image. It is entirely up to the author. Speaking of the author, now articles are linked to the authors account and will display their name as it is displayed on their profile. If the author decides to change their name, it will change on the articles they have posted as well.

Share Buttons
Nothing is better for SEO than backlinks to this site. Now every article has share buttons for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit, as well as the ability to email the article and print it out. To improve the “linkability” of these articles, dynamic Open Graph meta tags have been added to the header of each page. These tags are interpreted by other sites to display the proper title and description of each page when linking to this site. In other words, these tags show up in Facebook’s page share previews.

New Text Editor
Goodbye NicEdit and hello Trumbowyg! The previous text editor, NicEdit, was very outdated and would not allow for easy plugin integration. Trumbowg is a WYSIWYG editor that allows for jQuery integration and allows for picking and choosing the functions available. This means that the article posting editor can be much more advanced than the commenting text editor, and custom plugins can be added. This text editor also prevents deceptive/malicious text area entries like embedding harmful code into the comments section. The idea of this text editor is to have its most advanced functions available for posting articles and its most basic functions for posting comments. (It is not available for posting comments yet).

Tickers in the Article Body
Speaking of custom text editor plugins, a custom TradingView chart plugin has been implemented. Articles can now contain real-time TradingView chart widgets with the click of a button in the text editor. One downside of this is that charts can not be seen when in the text editor itself because it makes it impossible to continue editing the article. To add a ticker to the article body, use the chart checker in under the gallery in the bottom right corner of the new-post or edit-post to find the exact ticker name you are looking for. Then, click the @ button in the editor and type the ticker name as well as the time interval you wish to display. When a ticker is added it will appear as a grey box until the article is posted. If the ticker is wrong, click the remove tickers button below the editor and try again. Check it out:

A couple of small things
The investing section view was pretty ugly, so now the posts show in a single column and a category counter is displayed to right of them. Also, this site eventually needs an SEO touch up. The structure of the site is fine right now, but to obtain better SEO three things have to happen. First, the heading structure needs to be updated. SEO only allows for one Heading 1 tag (h1) per page. Second, this site needs a Robots.txt file. Search engines look for this file to determine what it should index. Last, search engines also look for a XML and HTML sitemap. This will be later down the line, but it is necessary.

Bug Fixes

Fixed library links in the nav bar.
